Three of the top four finishers all started outside of the top ten: Fernando Alonso won from 11th, Michael Schumacher went from 12th to third and Mark Webber finished behind him having started 19th.

Alonso owed his progress in the race to several things: a good start, rapid pit work by Ferrari, his own overtaking prowess – and a ready supply of unused tyres due to his exit in the second part of qualifying.

He passed Button off the line, and took Rosberg and Di Resta in turns four and five. Hulkenberg was dispensed with on lap 12.

Quick pit stops got him ahead of two rivals who might have proved especially hard to pass: Raikkonen at his first stop, Hamilton at his second – the latter thanks to more problems for McLaren on pit lane.

In between the two Alonso made light work of passing Webber, Senna and Schumacher in little more than one lap in a quite superb piece of driving.

Having inherited third from Hamilton, he nailed Grosjean with an opportunistic pass for second after the restart. It was Vettel’s retirement which ultimately handed him the lead, but Alonso and his team’s graft won him every other place he gained.

Schumacher made a less promising start from one place behind Alonso. The highest starter on the medium tyres, he held position to begin with, then slipped behind Button.

He ran longer than most in the first stint (though not quite as long as his team mate did on softs, Mercedes evidently not struggling with their rears) and when the safety car came out Mercedes were one of several teams to leave their drivers out.

In a 22-lap stint on softs, Schumacher ran as high as fifth before making his final pit stop with 16 laps to go. His pace in this final stint was such that even Ferrari had their eye on him, wary of a repeat of Canada.

He didn’t get quite that far but, with Webber following in his wheel tracks, he took Petrov, Button, Perez, Di Resta and Hulkenberg.

Had Maldonado and Hamilton not tangled, would Schumacher have caught the McLaren? The sudden loss of pace suffered by Hamilton on lap 55 – when he was 3.5s slower than Schumacher – suggests he might have.

The race chart also reveals Vettel’s lead peaked at 20.81s on lap 24 – almost the time it takes to make a pit stop.

Grosjean had begun to reverse the time loss before the safety car came out, cutting Vettel’s lead to 19s, but it’s far from certain Vettel would have allowed this progress to go unchecked any longer.
