Edwards forced to retire at the Assen GP

Colin Edwards Assen 2012

An electronic problem forced Colin Edwards and the NGM Mobile Forward Racing team to enter the pits during the Dutch TT Assen GP. A complicated weekend and specially Friday’s qualifying session, in which the American rider was not able to take advantage of his potential in the Suter – BMW bike.

The efforts of the team have not been enough in order to solve the problems encountered this week, specially the ones with the traction control. Problems that have not disappeared during the race, forcing the American to enter pits after just a few laps.

Colin Edwards – Retired
“It has been a complicated weekend in many respects. Yesterday’s weather conditions didn’t help at all in finding the pace and at the same time we have found problems with various components of the bike. During today’s race I enter pits because the traction control didn’t work, as it should. It was a shame because the team has worked really hard but we don’t seem to be able to solve these problems. We hope that things will go better in Sachsenring next week.”

Sergio Verbena – Crew Chief
“Through out all weekend Colin did not have a good feeling with the electronics of the bike. Today during the race we had problems with the electronics and especially with the traction control. It was too dangerous to continue the race and he preferred to enter pits and retire. Next week we go to Sachsenring hoping that we will be able to solve the problems we have encountered this week.”

MotoGP: Assen Assen They All Fall Down

With the Dutch weather improving from the scattered rains of Friday, to just a grey gloom for Saturdays’ Dutch TT, MotoGP had a cool, but dry race day in Holland. This would bode well for the Hondas, who gambled on the tire selection, going with the softer of the two compounds available from Bridgestone, while the Yamahas played a more conservative game on the harder compound (Ducati chose the lesser of its two evils, opting ...

MotoGP Renews Sachsenring Through 2016

The German round of MotoGP is to stay at the Sachsenring circuit until 2016. Dorna announced today that they had signed a five-year deal with the ADAC, who own the Sachsenring, to keep the race at the circuit. The race had been under threat earlier, after projected losses for the German GP meant that circuit feared not being able to afford the event. Dorna’s problem was that there are no real alternatives to the Sachsenring ...

Thursday Summary at Assen: It’s Not As Close As It Looks

The times were close after the first day of practice, closer than they have been for a very long time. Just 0.471 seconds separates the top 11 MotoGP prototypes (Karel Abraham is barely fit enough to ride, after breaking fingers in his left hand, and is way off the pace), with Ben Spies leading Cal Crutchlow by just 0.006, just a tenth separating Nicky Hayden in 3rd from Dani Pedrosa in 6th, and less than ...

This may not be strictly motorcycle-related, though we are pretty sure most motorcyclists can relate to the time and effort it takes to take apart a four-cylinder motor and put it back together again. As if refurbishing a motor bought off eBay, and swapping it out for a junked one that is still in the car wasn’t hard enough, our protagonist decided to document the whole process with thousands of photos. Who will be the 8th winner of 2012?

I've just been browsing some bookmaker prices for the 8th winner of 2012:

Grosjean 10/1
Raikkonen 12/1
Schumacher 20/1
Perez 25/1
Massa 40/1

So what does anyone think? I was thinking of having a few quid on Grosjean - he seems
most likely - and with Schumi creeping back into contention wondered whether to have
a tenner on the old master - any advice?

There are some others too:

Checa back at home for Aragon home race

Thursday, 28 June 2012 10:06

Carlos Checa

Having just participated in World Ducati Week at the Misano World Circuit, the Althea Racing team now turns its attention to round eight of the 2012 World Superbike Championship, taking place at Carlos Checa’s home track of MotorLand Aragon in Spain.

At the latest Misano round, which took place over two weeks ago, the team celebrated a double podium in race 1 when Checa and Davide Giugliano crossed the line in second and third place respectively; unfortunately the success was not to continue, with both riders crashing out of the second race.

Carlos Checa: “We had a chance during WDW to work a little on the settings of my 1198 to be as prepared for this weekend’s Aragon races as possible. It’s always good to race at home and I hope that the fans’ enthusiasm help me to make two great results. Last year didn’t go to plan here and so, although it won’t be at all easy, I hope to make up for that now at this important point of the championship.”

Davide Giugliano: “I enjoyed racing at Aragon last year when I won the Stock 1000 race, and I hope to make two more solid races this weekend with the Superbike. I like the track, though there’s a long straight that will penalize us. We carried out some testing during WDW, in hot conditions similar to what we’ll probably see in Aragon, and so I think I’m pretty prepared for the race.”

Old bike disposal

I've got a very old race bike that is banged to hell, doesn't run, and has virtually no salvageable parts.

Does anyone know someplace (a junkyard) near Bethlehem Pa. that will take the motor and frame?

Lorenzo Strikes in Silverstone

Jorge Lorenzo Silverstone 2012

Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo put in superb performance today for the Grand Prix of Great Britain, taking victory at the Silverstone circuit, his third consecutive victory this year. Having started from fourth on the grid, he dropped to fifth at the start and held position until lap six when he carved through to take up second place behind Casey Stoner in the lead. Stoner was only able to hold him off for four laps before the Championship leader made his move, the pass a beautiful battle with his rival over several corners.

Lorenzo then led from lap 11 to the finish line, a small mistake four laps from the end causing him to sit up was the only threat to victory. He crossed the line 3.313 seconds ahead of Stoner, taking maximum points and increasing his lead in the 2012 standings to 25 points. Lorenzo heads to Assen in two weeks time now having won four of the six races of the season with a point tally of 140. The victory also increases Yamaha’s lead in the Constructor’s standings to 140, 14 ahead of Honda.

Ben Spies made a dazzling start to the race, shooting from the front row to take first place by turn one. The Texan then delivered four perfect laps at the head of the pack and was looking in dominant form until a dramatic drop off in tyre grip dropped him to second by lap five behind Stoner. As he fought to maintain a competitive race pace he gradually dropped to fifth, a position he held to the finish line. The result is his best finish of the season, awarding 11 points and bringing his tally to 35 and keeping him in 11th place in the standings.

Jorge Lorenzo, Position 1st - Time: 41'16.429
“Today was a very difficult race, the front guys were very strong and very fast so it was very hard for me to catch them and stay with them. Little by little the rear tyre drops a bit more, I had good confidence and I was faster than them and I started to catch them. When I caught up I didn’t want to crash so I waited for my moment and was patient. When I caught Casey we had a wonderful fight, luckily for us I had a better pace and I passed him. Four laps from the end I made a big mistake and almost crashed! I’m very happy with the result, and for the team who gave me a good bike again.”

Ben Spies, Position 5th - Time: 41'27.960
“Today was a bitter sweet day, we made a good start and had a really good pace in the beginning. After four or five laps we had a big problem with the rear tyre and lost all our momentum and pace. It turned into damage control after that. From the start of the season to now, top five is a better result. The potential of the bike was great today and we could have been fighting for the podium or the win with Jorge.”

The Battle For MotoGP's Future: New Rules To Be Decided At Assen

It seems ironic - ironic at best, downright insane at worst - that at the 7th Grand Prix of the first season after a major capacity change in MotoGP, the Grand Prix Commission will be deciding on another major change in MotoGP regulations. With just one third of the races run of one season after such a change, why are the GP Commission even contemplating more changes?

The reason is simple: money, or rather the lack of it. A raft of technical rule changes introduced at the behest of the manufacturers has left the series struggling to fill the grid with the prototypes being built by the few manufacturers still racing, the others forced out either by a lack of success or the high costs of racing, or more usually a combination of both. The technical regulations drawn up by the MSMA have prevented new manufacturers from entering: even BMW, probably the biggest spenders in the World Superbike series, are saying that they cannot afford to go racing in MotoGP under the current rules, with BMW's head of motorcycle racing Bernhard Gobmeier pointing the finger of blame at Honda and Yamaha for making the series unsustainably expensive.

With costs too high, Dorna, the FIM and IRTA are casting around for a set of rules to make the racing more financially sustainable. That was not achievable with the rules that MotoGP had prior to 2012, and this year's rule package is only a little better. The combination of high horsepower, high revs and limited fuel means that millions are being poured into the development of electronics to keep the bikes rideable and make the fuel last. MotoGP needs cheaper racing, but, as they say, you can't get there from here.
