Exciting Battle, Cal Crutchlow Finish Fifth at Laguna Seca

Cal Crutchlow Laguna Seca 2012

British rider Crutchlow couldn't have put in a bigger effort to try and take fourth, but Dovizioso was once again brilliantly calm and collected under pres sure. In what has now become a familiar sight in the 2012 MotoGP World Championship, Cal Crutchlow were locked in an exciting battle together with his teammate right until the chequered flag.

Cal Crutchlow 5th – 106 points:
“I'm pretty happy with another solid finish inside the top five and that is a big improvement on last year where I struggled a lot at this track. All weekend I was inside the top six so to finish fifth and have another strong battle with Andrea is good for the Championship. Credit to Andrea again because he was faultless and it didn't seem to matter how much pressure I put on him, he remained ice cool and didn't put a foot wrong to give me a chance of passing. Any pas s would have been a desperate lunge and I certainly wasn't going to risk taking us both out in such an important race for Yamaha and Monster. It was a good battle with Ben for the first 20 laps and I feel sorry for him because it was building up to be a good fight between the three of us at the end. It was bad luck for Ben and I did everything I could without being able to take fourth from Andrea. It has been a great first half to the season for me. I've finished all 10 races and that was the consistency I was looking for. I'm now staying in America for a well earned break before coming back strong and confident for Indianapolis.”

Ketomaa hoping for more Finnish heroics

Story from www.wrc.com

Ketomaa shot into first place when he edged Sebastien Ogier by 0.2s through the opening stage of the Jyvaskyla-based round in 2011. Although he ultimately failed to finish, his performance 12 months ago will make him a contender for a strong result when the high-speed rally begins with the Qualifying Stage on Wednesday evening.
Following his test, the 33-year-old Finn said: “The first day of the test was really good and we’ve worked hard to try different suspension, ride height and differential settings. We tested on some softer roads with jumps and we have a very good feeling with the car and tyres. We then moved to a fast, wide road to finish off the preparations for the rally.”
Ketomaa will use DMACK’s DMG+2 gravel tyre in a soft compound, which has been designed for performance as well as providing the necessary grip and traction.
“Rally Finland is one of the fastest events and that demands excellent high-speed stability from our tyres,” said DMACK’s Dick Cormack. “We believe our new DMG+2 should be well suited and we already know the compound works well after last year’s event. We’ve had a really positive two-day test with Jari and hopefully we can help him deliver a strong performance on his home event.”

Sunday Summary at Laguna Seca: Contrasting Styles, Racing Softs, & A Decision is Nigh

Laguna Seca has a habit of throwing the Championship a curveball. The epic race between Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi in 2008 was a prime example, a turning point in the Championship when Rossi halted what looked like the inexorable rise of Casey Stoner. Last year, too, Laguna proved to be key moment in the Championship, when Stoner stopped Jorge Lorenzo’s resurgence with one of the bravest passes in racing for a long time, through ...

Andrea Dovizioso Not Sure for Podium at Laguna Seca

Andrea Dovizioso Laguna Seca 2012

Andrea Dovizioso will start next to each other with Cal Crutchlow on the second row of the grid for tomorrow's 32-lap US Grand Prix at the spectacular Laguna Seca track. Dovizioso were able to set an impressive pace in a s ession run in gloriously sunny conditions and put him on the sixth grid of the race.

Andrea Dovizioso 6th 1.21.539 – 34 laps:
"We improved the bike a lot this afternoon and it was quite a busy session because we lost a complete practice this morning with the weather conditions. We had to change the work p lan a little bit but we got everything we needed to accomplish done in the afternoon and I am happy and ready for the race. My race pace is good and I think I had the potential to be a bit higher up the grid but each time I tried to push on the soft tyre I encountered some traffic and couldn't get a clear track to put a whole lap together. It is going to be a very tough race tomorrow because the top three are so fast and I hate to say it but it looks impossible to beat them. I have worked a lot on the soft and the hard tyre and I like both, so we will have to decide which one we take for the race based on the conditions."

Ben Spies Got a Technical Failure with His Swingarm

Ben Spies Laguna Seca 2012

Ben Spies continued to experience his run of bad luck for his home race. Spies made a strong start from the grid, slotting in behind Casey Stoner in fourth through the first turn. Although unable to stay with the front pack the Texan was looking comfortable holding fourth ahead of Andrea Dovizioso until a dramatic crash in the corkscrew on the 22nd lap caused by a technical failure with his swingarm.

Ben Spies
"We had a technical failure in the swingarm. I was feeling really good, I didn’t have the grip that I had in the earlier sessions with the harder tyre but in the last ten laps I was starting to pull away and I had a little left up my sleeve. We started to stretch out a lead over Dovi then all of a sudden at the bottom of the corkscrew the bike went out from underneath me. I had no control, it didn’t slide or anything just completely went. At first I thought I’d hit a bump but there isn’t one there. It’s nobody’s fault but it’s more bad luck.”

A great win for FCC TSR Honda

FCC TSR Honda won the Suzuka 8 hours with a four-lap lead, followed by the Honda of Toho Racing with Moriwaki with Tatsuya Yamaguchi, Yuki Takahashi and Yusuke Teshima on board, and the Yamaha France GMT 94 Michelin Yamalube ridden by David Checa et Kenny Foray. Winners here at Suzuka in 2011, the FCC TSR Honda, crewed by Jonathan Rea, Kosuke Akiyoshi and Tadayuki Okada, came out of the practice sessions behind three other favourites, Monster Energy Yamaha YART, Musashi RT Harc-Pro and the Yoshimura Suzuki Racing Team. But this 35th edition proved tough for many of the pre-race favourites. Katsuyuki Nakusuga, who earned his team the pole position with a breath-taking lap in 2'06.845, crashed on the Monster Energy Yamaha YART just over half an hour into the race. And a crash by Ryuichi Kiyonari after five hours on the track also put paid to the victory hopes of Musashi RT Harc-Pro. The Suzukis too had their share of misfortune. The Yoshimura Suzuki Racing Team were hit by an oil leak and failed to make it to the finish. In second place behind the FCC TSR Honda until then, the Suzuki Endurance Racing Team slipped down the field after a crash by Vincent Philippe. The World Champion Suzuki came in fifteenth at Suzuka. Fate also struck the BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent, another contender for the runner-up spot. A faulty electronic sensor on the S1000RR forced it back into ninth place at the finish, seven laps behind the winner and just ahead of the Honda TT Legends and the Kawasaki Bolliger Team Switzerland, who gave a good account of themselves at Suzuka. The competition was thrilling till the end. The most intense duel was the struggle for third place in the final half hour between David Checa on the Yamaha France GMT 94 Michelin Yamalube and Ozamu Deguchi on the Kawasaki Eva RT Trick Star. Checa came through with brio before Deguchi was stymied by engine trouble on his ZX-10R. Another FIM World Endurance Championship permanent team made it to the finish at its first shot at the Suzuka 8 hours. The Suzuki of Team R2CL came in 24th with Jérôme Tangre, Amaury Baratin and Raphaël Chaussé at the helm. Two Hondas running on Bridgestone were today's logical winners at Suzuka but Michelin made an impression in Japan this year with a pole position and a place on the podium. This Suzuka 8 hours has also given a new impetus to the FIM Endurance World Championship. The Suzuki Endurance Racing Team is still in front with a narrow 5-point lead over the Honda TT Legends. But Yamaha France GMT 94 Michelin Yamalube has really improved its chances as it is now back in contention ahead of the BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent and just 11 points behind the SERT with two rounds still to go. The next round of the FIM Endurance World Championship is the Oschersleben 8 Hours that takes place in Germany on Saturday 11 August. What they said… Jonathan Rea, rider, FCC TSR Honda, tired and happy at the finish "Suzuka is really an extraordinary race that is nothing like the other events. I am really glad it's over because it was extremely tough. I didn't do the practice here but my team mates Kosuke Akiyoshi and Tadayuki Okada helped me a lot, especially when I had to really push hard after my fuel problem at the start of the race." David Checa, rider on Yamaha France GMT 94 Michelin Yamalube "The end of the race was very intense. At every lap, my team kept me informed of the time gaps between me and the competition and I really had to fight for this 3rd place." Christophe Guyot, team manager Yamaha France GMT 94 Michelin Yamalube "David really is a fabulous rider. He is intelligent, he has the physical strength and he knows how to manage his races. In his first relay, he knew right away that we just need to change the rear tyre that had got torn by something on the track, without wasting time getting the bike into the pit box." Nicolas Dussauge, team manager BMW Motorrad France Team Thevent "I am disappointed of course, but paradoxically I would say we were lucky to finish the race. It's a very tough decision to take to send a rider on to the track with a motorcycle that could be dangerous. Because one of the sensors had gone, the engine couldn't take more than 7 000 rpm." Casey Stoner Just 0.074 Second from the Pole

Casey Stoner Laguna Seca 2012

Casey Stoner spent most of the session working on hard tyres and kept the softer slicks for the last five minutes, when he managed to improve his lap times by almost half a second and take second place on the grid with 1'20.628, just 0.074 second from the pole.

Casey Stoner
"I'm disappointed as I think we definitely had the potential for pole position. We spent most of the session with the hard tyre trying to improve our pace, we've been struggling with it all season when the temperatures aren't high enough to get it working and we had made a few steps and weren't too far off the pace. Then we put on the soft tyre and unfortunately we never got a clean lap. There was always a CRT bike in the way and considering we're 3-4 seconds a lap quicker than them, you come up on them pretty quick, no matter how big a gap you give them. Every lap was spoiled which is very frustrating as I really feel we could have been on pole but we'll have to settle for where we are. Tyre choice for the race will depend on the weather conditions tomorrow, I think we have the pace and longevity in the tyre for the soft, but if it's hot then we may have to try and make the hard work."

Andrea Dovizioso Get His Best Fourth at Laguna Seca

Andrea Dovizioso Laguna Seca 2012

Dovizioso made one of his trademark blistering launches off the start line to quickly seize fifth place from Crutchlow on the run to the tight first corner.

The Italian then quickly found a fart and consistent rhythm in front of a sun-drenched Californian crowd o f 52,677 fans to mount a charge towards Factory Yamaha rider Ben Spies. Spies needed to call on all his vast home track knowledge to keep Dovizioso at bay. But a crash for the American exiting the spectacular Corkscrew section on lap 22 put Dovizioso into fourth position.

Dovizioso though never had the opportunity to relax, as a determined Crutchlow had remained glued to the back of his YZR-M1 machine right from the first lap.

Andrea Dovizioso 4th – 121 points:
“It would have been nice to have kept the podium sequence going for a fourth race in a row but we have to be very satisfied with today's result because it was the best we could achieve when you consider the pace the top three have shown all weekend. Ben was doing a fantastic race and credit to him because he wasn't in the best physical condition. It is a big pity that he crashed because at the end of the race I am sure we could have had a really nice battle. It wasn't easy to stay with him and I was pushing really hard but when Ellison crashed there was a lot of sand on the track and I hit it and los t some time. It is a positive result and this busy period in the Championship has been very successful but we have to say the gap to the top three was very big. We head to the summer break confident for the rest of the season and ready to return in Indianapolis refreshed and looking forward to improving our performance.”

Nicky Hayden To Stay With Ducati MotoGP Team For 2013

Nicky Hayden will be staying with Ducati in MotoGP for the 2013 season. Ducati Corse today issued an official press release announcing Hayden's contract extension for another year.

Hayden's continuation at Ducati had been in doubt for over a month, with the news that Ducati was in talks with Cal Crutchlow for next season emerging after Silverstone. Since then, internal discussion - and the support of Ducati CEO Gabriele Del Torchio - has swung back in Hayden's favor, seeing the Kentuckian offered a new contract for next year. Hayden's popularity around the globe, and most especially, his importance to the key US market was a major factor in the decision to extend Hayden's contract. Stability in the team also played a role; with a strong chance that Valentino Rossi could leave the team at the end of this season, starting 2013 with two new riders was felt to be too great a risk. By securing Hayden's services for next year, some continuity in bike development is ensured.

With Hayden now signed, all eyes are on his teammate Valentino Rossi. Rossi is due to make a decision on whether to stay with Ducati or move back to Yamaha in the short summer break between Laguna Seca and Indianapolis. There are no clear signs of what that decision will be as yet. Ducati, like the rest of the world, will have to sit and wait.
