Storm In A Tea Cup: How A Recycled Interview Reignited The Rossi vs Stoner Wars

There is no rivalry in MotoGP more bitter than that between Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner, more bitter even than the one between Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz. It has been a constant element in their relationship since Stoner won his first MotoGP title in 2007 (ironically, Stoner named Rossi as one of his heroes on the t-shirt he wore to celebrate that championship), though hardly a surprise, as the two men are polar opposites in almost every respect, except for their prodigious talent. The rivalry has intensified over the years, stoked by a series of incidents (nicely outlined by the peerless Italian website GPOne.com recently), including the booing of Stoner by Rossi fans at Donington in 2008, the epic battle at Laguna Seca in 2008, and the war of words between the two in 2010, ahead of Rossi's move to Ducati.

The rivalry does not just polarize the two riders, it also polarizes their fans. The comments section of almost any news story featuring the two men is riddled with posts by people blinded by fanaticism, with logic and calm consideration nowhere to be found. This polarization leaves the media with a dilemma: on the one hand, events concerning the two, and verbal exchanges between them need to be treated as newsworthy, and due consideration given to covering them as such. On the other hand, the media operate in the certain knowledge that covering the dispute is sure to sell more newspapers and magazines, generate more traffic to a website, and grab more viewers for a TV show. Reporting on these stories leaves journalists open to charges of sensationalism, but not reporting on them means they can be accused of not doing their jobs.

Images of 2012: Volkswagen's WRC bid is go

Story from www.wrc.com

December: Volkswagen chose the backdrop of Monaco’s famous Casino Square to launch its FIA World Rally Championship bid in early December. As well as confirming rising talent Andreas Mikkelsen for a 10-event campaign alongside ever-present drivers Jari-Matti Latvala and Sebastien Ogier, the German make used the event to show off an almost-finished version of its Polo R WRC. But while a number of media guests enjoyed dinner and a Sunday-morning lie-in, it was back to work for Latvala and Ogier, who went testing in France in preparation for the 2013 season-opening Rallye Monte-Carlo when the Polo will be used in competition for the first time.

Photographer's Blog: A Story About an Ending

For years Phillip Island has been a track I'd planned to go to, but for one reason or another, it was a trip I'd not been able to make happen. I was ticking off other top locations such as Catalunya, Mugello, Assen, places that were Bucket List items for me both as a race fan and a photographer. But PI wouldn't cooperate.

As soon as Casey issued his surprise announcement that he was retiring, I knew I had to make it to Phillip Island. This time there could be no excuse: I had to see Casey ride at his home track, and this was my last chance. Fortunately for me, there was still some money in the bank from the Elbow Down edition to pay for airfare and expenses. And my wife, whose patience and kindness seem to know no bounds, agreed to manage the childcare without my help yet again this season. I booked the trip and held my breath.

Ricciardo braced for crucial season (Autosport)

“My Achilles heel is that this year, in the first part of the season, I wasn’t aggressive enough in the races. In some aspects I was the opposite of [Romain] Grosjean. Now, however, I think I’ve found the right balance in showing my capabilities.”

50 not-so-famous personalities from sport’s greatest ever year (The Guardian)

The inclusion of Ricciardo on this list is rather odd but it’s good to see Jimmy Vasser get a mention (via Alex Zanardi).

Comment of the day

Can F1 survive without Bernie Ecclestone? @Joao-Pedro-CQ isn’t sure:

When Ecclestone drops down, because he eventually will someday, I truly believe Formula One will make a mess out of it self. Bernie is the glue that keeps teams, FIA and FOM together, and the one who makes the relation work. When he goes, it will be hard to have stability. At least, that’s what I think.

Seventh place in Valencia Abraham's best result of the season

Karel Abraham Valencia 2012
Two years ago in Valencia, Karel Abraham won for the first time in his career. Last year he battled for fourth. This year he achieved his best result of the season in a “wacky race” at Circuit Ricardo Tormo and managed to repeat his personal best in MotoGP. Battling for seventh place, Karel managed, among other things, to defeat nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi for the first time during a race.

The race was affected by weather from the very beginning. Following morning rain showers the track was getting dry and the teams chose different tactics of how to deal with the changing conditions. Cardion AB Motoracing went into the race with tyres for wet races, as did many other racers. Some of them changed their tyres, in exchange for having to start from the end of the pit lane. Other racers also had to change their tyres after only a few laps, which resulted in changes in the lead and the situation was very confusing for the racers themselves.
Abaja demonstrated a skilful battle, which included overtaking Valentino Rossi and battling for sixth place with the best satellite racer of the season, Andrea Dovizioso on Yamaha.
Due to the confusing situation in the first few laps many riders, including Karel Abraham, started to fall behind and the leaders eventually started to lap everyone else. Abraham was the last rider who managed to complete the entire race, because he overtook the winner of the race, Dani Pedrosa.

Karel Abraham
“It was indeed a wacky race and there was much excitement on the track. There were many surprising moments. At one moment, I was overtaken by the winner of the race, Dani Pedrosa, but I had no idea I was just being lapped. I thought he had just had his tyres changed in the pit. So I was in fact racing with him without actually having to. On the other hand, it's great that I managed to overtake him and stay in front of him. I am really glad that I managed to achieve the best result among Ducatis and leave Valentino Rossi behind. When I caught up with him I thought he had a wet tyre and I was really surprised that he had a slick. On the other hand, I am a little upset that Dovizioso eventually overtook me, because I could have finished sixth. It was a tyre lottery prior to the race. It was not the wisest of choices on our part. I am a little disappointed, but, then again, there is no point in looking back. With slick tyres from the very beginning, I could have been on the podium. On the other hand, I would have risked falling because the dry racing line was really narrow at the beginning of the race.

Marco Grana, Chief Mechanic, Cardion AB Motoracing
“I am really happy after today's race. Not just because it was his best race of the season and because he managed to repeat his career best. I am particularly glad that we have managed to conclude our cooperation with Ducati with a very good result. In addition, Karel proved that he is able to race against riders who have much better bikes. The decision before the race about the best tyres was a tough one. We thought, just like some other teams did, that a wet tyre would allow us to gain some advantage for a subsequent pit stop. Unfortunately we had to make the pit stop after just a few laps and lost about 30 seconds which Karel was unable to erase. On the other hand, it was a wise decision to use the front soft slick tyre, as Karel managed to achieve excellent lap times and was even faster than Pedrosa, Dovizioso or Nakasuga. We quickly managed to overtake Valentino Rossi. This race marks the end of our cooperation with Ducati. I am glad it was a dignified goodbye. Starting tomorrow, it will be a brand new chapter with an Aprilia CRT bike. We need to work hard from the very beginning. Our ambition is to have the best CRT bike in the 2013 season.”

Ecclestone admits he could be forced to step down | F1 Fanatic round-up

Ecclestone admits bribe case could end F1 reign (The Telegraph)

“Mr Ecclestone says CVC ‘will probably be forced to get rid of me if the Germans come after me. It’s pretty obvious, if I’m locked up’.”

Grosjean: Lotus will be stronger in 2013 (Autosport)

“We learned a lot this year about the car, the tyres, the set-up of an F1 car. We were quite good at the start of the year, but even in the last two grands prix we were looking good.”

Comment of the day

@RogerCamp also has high hopes for Lotus this year:

I’m sure Raikkonen thought it would be wiser to be cautious in his first comeback season.

I’m positive that next season will be a little different. He’ll be more aggressive. He’s now more comfortable with the team, the car, tires, etc…

I’m pretty sure Lotus will deliver a faster car. They spent a lot of effort last season with the double DRS, which was a waste, they should have focused on developing the Coanda exhaust.

In the last few races it seemed they started to catch on with that. If Grosjean sort out his demons, maybe Lotus can finish second in the constructors’ championship, which will help them developing the car for 2014.

Loeb contemplated early retirement

Story from www.wrc.com

Loeb, who made it nine FIA World Rally Championship crowns in a row in 2012, first started contemplating retirement as a 31-year-old in 2005, his third season as a full-time WRC pilot while he was en route to his second drivers’ title.
“I think already in 2005, I told my mother that I would stop soon,” Loeb told the Sport Auto magazine in France. “But it’s also been a few years that Daniel [Elena] has been saying to me ‘come on, let’s keep going until 2012’ and I always thought ‘is he mad?’ But in the end, here we are in 2012...”
Loeb admits though that what kept him going for so long was that his need for competition was just as great as that of his co-driver. “I needed to keep driving,” he pointed out. “As soon as I realised that, I put Sebastien Loeb Racing into place: so that I could have a long-term future in motorsport. I’m also going to be a brand ambassador for Citroen, but not just somebody who signs autographs: that sort of role doesn’t interest me.”
Ironically, with his nine-round GT campaign in a McLaren and four rallies with Citroen, Loeb is likely to be just as busy in 2013 as he was this year.

Teknic Violator Gloves - New For 2013

Teknic chose to redesign their Violator gloves for 2013, and the result is a solid pair that offers a whole lot of bang for the buck. In fact, these are the gloves that Josh Hayes chose to wear during his dominant, championship-winning 2012 season.

The Teknic Violators wrap your hands in durable cowhide that is doubled up in high-risk areas like the base of the palm, pinky, thumb, and wrist. These reinforced areas are made of large cuts of leather with minimal stitching in order to maintain as much of the original strength as possible. Knit kevlar is found between the two leather layers at the base of the palm, as well as running up the side of the hand and into the pinky for extra abrasion resistance.

The palm has been changed to sheepskin for 2013, which gives them a very supple feel with great feedback. It features the same scaphoid sliders as the Xcelerators and they protect your wrists from the all too common palm first landing, without interfering with your control of the bike. Additional molded protectors are found at the wrist, side of the pinky, and across the knuckles. All of these molded pieces have integrated air intakes that work together with the perforated leather sections to help keep your hands cool and comfortable. This is not the only comfort feature found on the Violators, however.

A combination of accordion stretch segments in the first two fingers and thumb, the sheepskin palm and Kevlar stretch panel on the back of the hand make them extremely flexible right off the bat. The Violators also feature a pre-curved shape to the fingers, which helps eliminate the bunching of material in the palm. This bunching is not only uncomfortable, but can also cause blisters to develop.

Overall, we think Teknic did a great job on the redesigned 2013 Violators. There are a lot of gloves to choose from in the sub-$200 category (which these come in well under), but these are definitely one of the best values available. If you’re interested in a pair of your own, feel free to get in touch with Brad through this forum or by calling 866.931.6644 ext. 810. Is email more convenient? You can send those to FORUM at RIDERSDISCOUNT dot COM and we’ll get back to you right away!

Teknic Violator gloves come in two color options. Black..

and White/Black.

Scaphoid sliders help protect you from your own instinct to put your hands out in the event of a fall. They keep your hands sliding, rather than catching the pavement and sending the impact force through the hand, wrist, arm and shoulder.

Molded knuckle protectors are backed by high density foam for impact protection, while also allowing air to flow through the vents.

The pinkies are guarded by secondary leather wrap with a Kevlar lining.

An abrasion resistant Kevlar knit stretch panel surrounds a vented portion on the back of the hand, providing both flexibility and cooling.

Vented knuckle protectors help to protect and cool the fingers.
