Alpinestars SMX Plus Gore-Tex Waterproof Boots

Alpinestars launched their re-designed SMX Plus boots last fall and they were an immediate hit. The 2011 SMX Plus had many of the same features as the top-of-the-line Supertech R, only boiled down into a more reasonably priced package. The new model was originally released in both standard and vented versions, but this wasn’t quite but this wasn’t quite enough for Alpinestars. In order to cover all of their bases, they added a third SMX Plus variant for wet weather - the SMX Plus Gore-Tex Waterproof boots.

This new version of the SMX Plus uses a waterproof and breathable membrane from the weatherproofing gurus at Gore-Tex to help keep your feet comfortable 365 days a year. The Gore-Tex membrane really is the only thing that differentiates the newest addition to the SMX Plus line from the other two versions, but this is not a negative at all seeing as how the re-designed SMX Plus was already a very comfortable and protective boot.

Protection comes in quite a few different forms on the SMX Plus Gore-Tex. Alpinestars added their new Multi Link Control system to the rear of each boot when they gave them the overhaul last year. This exoskeleton not only helps prevent excessive ankle joint movement in a fall, but also provides impact protection to both sides of the ankle and Achilles heel. Additionally, the system gives you one more highly abrasion resistant layer between your foot and the road. The Multi Link Control system is made up of three separate parts. These include the TPU heel cup, a lower pivot joint at the sides of the ankle, and an upper link that slides through a tunnel located in the center of the calf protector. The whole system pivots and flexes comfortably without interfering with any movements on, or off the bike. All of this sits on top of durable rubber sole that is designed to last. The sole’s grip pattern features rain siping that will help you keep your feet on the pegs even if you’re pushing it in wet weather.

Inside the boot you will find a microfiber liner that is both soft and breathable. Alpinestars also used a liberal amount of open cell foam in all the right places so that it quickly molds to the shape of your feet to provide protection and a perfect fit. To further insure a good, snug fit, they added a Kevlar speed lace behind the outer layer. The SMX Plus gives you solid and reassuring feeling while remaining surprisingly flexible.

The SMX Plus Gore-Tex Boots can be had in any color you want, as long as it’s black.

The Multi Link Control system uses three separate parts to support the ankle and prevent hyperextension. It does both of these things while remaining very flexible.

The soles of the SMX Plus Gore-Tex boots use rain sipes to quickly shed water and enhance your grip in wet weather.

A look inside the boots reveals the Kevlar speed lace system. This system gives a firm, comfortable grip that improves feel and increases the level of protection by ensuring that the safety mechanisms are properly aligned.

The Gore-Tex name is synonymous with weather-proofing.
